Abstract:
Agriculture Sector Review (ASR), funded by the UNDP/Dhakd, was requested by the MOA/GOB primarily
To evaluate the performance of agriculture and, as appropriate, to make recommendations for alternative policies and institutional changes for improved performance and an increased contribution by agriculture to economic development of the nation.
The ASR team completed its task in 1988-89 and made a number of recommendations covering many facets of agriculture sector. Some of the major policies related to agricultural input such as irrigation, fertilizers, and agricultural machinery while others included credit , prices, and markets. Attention was also given to the institutional reorganization and other global factors in the agricultural economy of Bangladesh.
The immediate objective of the proposed study is to make a quick assessment of the implementation of policies suggested by the agriculture Sector Review which have been accepted by GOB. A secondary objective of the study is to establish a benchmark for the future impact analyses which will be undertaken on a regular basis.
This Study will assist in setting up a mechanism which would enable the MOA to effectively monitor the situation in the agriculture sector and have a broad outlook at the extent of implementation of policy recommendations as well as identify the need to formulate appropriate new policies.
