Considering these questions and the terms of reference led to the development of objectives: 1. Editors should begin to view journals: as part of a large information system, as part of a scientific tradition, as a manufactured object, as a vehicle for reaching practical goals. 2. Editors should begin to view their role as active, rather than passive, in determining how authors prepare and submit manuscripts. 3. Editors should understand and accept redaction as a necessary aspect of journal production and should understand how it contributes to the quality of a journal. 4. Editors should understand the importance of proofing in determining the quality of a journal. 5. Editors should begin to take and active role in determining the physical characteristics of a journal and an acceptable level of printing. 6. Editors should begin familiarity with international networks for dissemination of research. 7. Editors should have an opportunity to discuss funding problems. 8. Editors should have some understanding of possible sources of income outside of institutional funding. 9. Editors should begin to view their role as collegial with a view toward developing practices and conventions in support of journal quality. Out of these objectives the workshop was planned along the lines of the circular models. |
